Growing Health and Fitness Franchises

Health and Fitness franchises have grown in popularity. The reason for this is due to continued growth in the industry. Everyone wants to get fit, and our country is plagued by obesity. Many investors and every day people looking to fire their boss and start their own health club have questions about the health and fitness industry. We look to help answer these questions.

1. ABOUT FRANCHISING

The gym business has always been pretty cut throat. It can easily be sink or swim and for those with little experience, it is more sink than swim. There are so many things to consider and mistakes that can be made if you do not have any experience. For this reason franchising has had so much popularity. It allows you to be in business for yourself without necessarily being in business by yourself. You are essentially provided the blueprint for success.

2. WHICH FRANCHISE IS RIGHT FOR ME?

There are many franchise concepts but how do you choose the right one? The important thing is that you reach out to each one individually and speak to one of their franchise specialists. Each franchise may have a different approach. As a leader in the fitness industry, we see the differences every day. The important thing is that you do your research and due diligence as this decision is not one that should be taken lightly.

3. HOW MUCH CAN IT COST TO START A GYM?

The cost can vary on a variety of factors, but you usually need at least $150K in liquid assets and a net worth of at least $300K. The franchise fee is usually very minimal so the majority of this will go into the build-out, equipment, and leasing of the club.

4. HOW MUCH REVENUE CAN I EXPECT?

This really depends on the franchise. Some franchises focus on having large facilities so they can attract as many members as possible and are more focused on membership fees. This of course, comes with more expenses and a higher overhead. The Zoo Health Club for example, believes in keeping its overhead low and having a multiple revenue strategy where it operates like multiple businesses under 1 roof to increase profitability. So, although member fees are important, it has a strong strategy and focus on personal training, workout classes, kids club, amenities, juice bar, supplements, apparel, etc….

5. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO START UP?

The process to open your club can be 6 months to a year, but we have seen less. This really varies on many factors, finding the right location being one of the reasons for delays. But we always recommend that anyone that is looking into owning a fitness franchise to see some of the informational videos we have available.
